Derrick Kim

“RATE IT UP!” “MAINTAIN!” “READY FOR LAST CHARGE!” are the words that commonly heard during Derrick’s dragon boat training sessions and races. Dragon boat racing is a sport that requires maximum amount of team work and synchronization. No individual is perfect, every team member is leveraging on each others strength to maximize the team’s performance. This is one of the Derrick’s beliefs; “Creating synergy”. A team that formed for any purpose has only 3 objectives; “Gel, synergize and accomplish goal!”

He, who able to work as a team must also be able to work individually. A man who aims to lead a team must be clear of directions, objectives and constraints. Through taking part in biathlon, triathlon and marathons, Derrick believes in developing mental and physical well-being, focusing on track and surpassing own self before competing with others.

Derrick’s interest in various logistical functions probably started from his pillion ride on his father’s bike to the Pasir Panjang sea ports. Always curious and fascinated by the big coloured boxes, wonder why those cranes kept shifting and stacking them like Lego bricks. In Temasek Polytechnic, he had completed his Diploma in Logistics and Operations Management. Equipped with necessary knowledge and understand what those coloured metal boxes are for, he looked beyond the logistical functions.

He furthered his tertiary education at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, achieving Bachelor degree in Business (Transport & Logistics Management) from. Fortunate to have Industry practitioners as lecturers, they had shared their own valuable experience, which made the program more interesting. This allowed the students to see the difference between theoretical and real-life situations. Derrick’s current employment involves in reverse logistics. Although it is considered a cost centre, the role is still vital in the supply chain. During his stint in a wine importing company, he assisted the company to integrate warehouse storage and picking operations into the I.T. system.

Derrick stumbled upon a chance to join the Young Professional Community through a career talk organized by Supply Chain Asia. In this line of profession, it is important to be resourceful. No one knows a contact from any industry may come in handy when in need. That’s what Derrick always advocate; be resourceful always! Other than networking, it is also good to develop the younger generation, sharing important lessons and experiences. Thus bridging the gap between the veterans and the younger professionals became important as it can help to save them from fewer wrong turns.
